Lancaster and the Civil War Poster

John Jarvis is, without a doubt, one of Lancaster County’s favorite local artists. In addition to serving as headmaster of Lancaster Country Day School from 1965-1990, Jarvis was the president of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County from 1995 through 1998. Here’s your chance to own a print of his unique work.

Entitled “Lancaster and the Civil War,” this lithograph highlights five Lancastrians and their contributions during the Civil War. The print’s center features the historic burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville covered bridge on June 28, 1863, which prevented Confederate forces from entering Lancaster County.

Those highlighted on the poster include:

  • General John F. Reynolds
  • General John Brown Gordon C.S.A
  • William Parker (runaway slave who established a Black community near Christiana)
  • James Buchanan
  • Thaddeus Stevens
  • Rosina Hubley (helped bring the 43-foot-tall Soldiers and Sailors Monument to Penn Square)
