November Speaker Series: The Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor

Discover Ancient Mysteries Carved in Stone

Join local historian and explorer Adam Zurn, founder of Uncharted Lancaster, for a fascinating journey into one of Lancaster County’s oldest and most mysterious archaeological treasures—the Safe Harbor petroglyphs.

Hidden on the rocky islands of the Lower Susquehanna River, these ancient carvings are believed to be over 1,000 years old, created by Native American peoples long before European settlement. They represent the oldest known human-made artifacts in Lancaster County and one of the most significant archaeological sites in the northeastern United States.

During this illustrated talk, Zurn will recount his expeditions down the Susquehanna to document and interpret these enigmatic symbols—carvings of thunderbirds, foxes, footprints, four-legged animals, and mysterious figures that may depict canoes, childbirth, or ceremonial feasts. He’ll explore possible meanings behind the petroglyphs and share some of the local legends and folklore surrounding Big Indian Rock and Little Indian Rock, the twin outcrops where the carvings reside.

This in-person presentation is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required due to limited seating. It’s ideal for adults and older children with a love of exploration, history, and mystery.

Attendees will receive free Uncharted Lancaster stickers and magnets, plus replica arrowheads for younger guests. Signed copies of Zurn’s books—Ghosts, Monsters, and Tales of Adventure, Uncharted Lancaster: Field Guide to the Strange, Storied, and Hidden Places of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Canassatego and His Six Arrows—will be available for purchase, with 50% of proceeds donated to the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.
