Historic Preservation Forum for Municipal Officials to be Held on September 19

Municipal officials from throughout Lancaster County will come together on Thursday, September 19, 2013, to discuss historic preservation.  The forum is hosted by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.

“Since February, the Preservation Trust has been making presentations to townships and boroughs to build upon established relationships,” said Lisa Horst, president of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.  “We have presented to officials from 43 of the county’s 60 municipalities, and a common question has been ‘What are others doing to identify and protect historic structures?’”

The forum will be an opportunity for elected and appointed officials to exchange ideas about historic preservation and to hear from experts in the field.  Two of the forum leaders will be Ron Anzalone, director of the Office of Historic Preservation Initiatives, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, in Washington, D.C., and Carole Wilson Stauffer, former historic preservation specialist with the Lancaster County Planning Commission.

“Through our exchanges with municipal officials, we have gained an even greater appreciation for the fact that each township and borough approaches historic preservation differently,” Horst explained.  “We also have learned that there is a general respect for preservation and a desire to save historic structures when appropriate, realizing that some cannot be saved but others should be through community involvement and decisions made by elected officials.”

The forum will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lancaster Country Club, 466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.  The cost is $25 per elected or appointed official or township or borough staff.
